Research Themes

The Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project - (Lake Chad Basin Scholarships Program) Masters and PhD Studentship Scholarship Scheme supports research in the following thematic areas:

AGRICULTURE VALUE CHAIN

This thematic area focuses on the entire process of producing, processing, and marketing agricultural products. It aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers and their communities by strengthening the agriculture value chain. This includes improving the productivity and efficiency of smallholder farmers, enhancing access to markets and finance, and promoting value addition and agro-processing. The goal is to increase the income and food security of smallholder farmers and contribute to poverty reduction in rural areas. Research under this theme may focus on improving agricultural production techniques, post-harvest handling, storage, and transportation of agricultural products, market access, and improving the quality of products. The goal is to improve the income and livelihoods of farmers, increase food security, and contribute to economic growth.

CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION, RECLAMATION, RESILIENCE, AND ADAPTABILITY

This research area addresses the impacts of climate change and seeks to mitigate its effects by promoting sustainable development practices. The focus is on increasing the resilience and adaptability of communities to climate change, rehabilitating degraded ecosystems, and promoting sustainable land use practices. This includes the development of renewable energy sources, climate-smart agriculture practices, and the implementation of disaster risk reduction measures. The goal is to reduce the vulnerability of communities to climate change and promote sustainable development.

REGIONAL PLANNING

This thematic area focuses on promoting regional development and spatial planning. It aims to create inclusive and sustainable development that enhances the quality of life of communities. Research under this theme will focus on analysing the existing regional development policies and strategies, identifying gaps and opportunities, and developing new policies and strategies. The goal is to promote equitable and balanced regional development, enhance the economic and social development of regions, and promote sustainable urbanisation.

GIS, RURALITY, URBANISM

This thematic area focuses on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support development planning and decision-making. It aims to enhance the use of spatial data in the planning and implementation of development projects. This includes the use of GIS to map and analyse rural and urban areas, support infrastructure development, and enhance service delivery. The goal is to promote evidence-based decision-making and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of development interventions.

PEACE BUILDING, SOCIAL COHESION, PREVENTION, AND COUNTERING VIOLENT EXTREMISM

This research area focuses on the challenges of conflict and violence in development. It aims to promote peace building, social cohesion, and prevent and counter violent extremism. Research under this theme may focus on analysing the root causes of violent extremism, developing strategies for preventing and countering violent extremism, promoting social cohesion, and building peace. This includes the design of programs and policies that address the root causes of conflict and promote social inclusion and dialogue. The goal is to promote sustainable peace and social cohesion, reduce the risk of violent conflict, and enhance development outcomes.
